The death of Jelly Bee is more than a moment of grief for the music scene. It is a deep, personal loss felt by everyone who believed in her light.

We had brief encounters, and like many others, I was drawn to her easygoing spirit. As a former student of SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School in Bo, she had a special way of bonding with fellow alumni. She never missed a chance to reconnect, always greeting people with laughter, playful jokes, and a warmth that made them feel remembered.

Jelly Bee, born Betty Lamboi, possessed a unique energy that distinguished her long before she gained fame. From her early beginnings, she steadily built her path in music, starting with her first recording in 2016 and quickly gaining recognition for her sharp lyricism and bold presence. Her music began to travel far, especially with tracks like “I Gboya” and “High Tension.” These songs helped her reach a wider audience and showcased her skill at blending Afrobeat rhythms with rap in a way that was both unique and bold. Working alongside artists like Deeno Jay and Nega Don, she proved she was not just participating in the industry; she was helping define it.

What made her even more remarkable was her purpose beyond music. She used her voice to uplift, especially advocating for women and girls to take up space and be heard. She represented strength, independence, and possibility in a space where that representation is often limited. Her presence carried meaning that extended beyond entertainment, touching on identity and empowerment in an evolving creative landscape.

Her passing on February 20, 2025, came far too early, leaving behind a sense of unfinished brilliance. Losing someone who had so much ahead of them, a future filled with music, influence, and growth that we will never fully witness, brings a certain heaviness.

Beyond the loss itself, Jelly Bee’s legacy carries a broader meaning for Sierra Leone. She became a member of a generation that is redefining the perception of the country’s talent, instilling confidence, far-reaching aspirations, and a strong sense of identity. In an industry still developing its global footing, her rise showed that Sierra Leonean artists can move beyond local recognition and enter wider cultural spaces. For many, she stood as a reflection of possibility, showing that ambition can emerge from familiar places and still reach beyond borders. Despite the abrupt end to her journey, that message endures.

Still, her story does not end here. The mark she left behind lives on in her songs, in the people she inspired, and in the memories she created. She will be remembered for her spirit, her humor, and the genuine presence she carried so effortlessly. Though she is no longer here, her impact continues to speak.

Rest peacefully, Jelly Bee. You may be gone, but what you gave the world will endure.
