She views legal guidance not merely as a tool to resolve problems, but as a pathway to create opportunities and foster growth.

We sought an audience with Gittel Ayuk recently to gain insight into her work and the impact she is making in advancing economic development in Cameroon.

You have built a career at the intersection of law, business and development. What inspired you to focus on using legal expertise to drive economic growth in Cameroon?

“My interest in working at the intersection of law, business, and development grew from observing how closely legal systems influence economic activities, particularly in developing economies like Cameroon. Over time, I realized that beyond resolving disputes, the law has the power to shape markets, attract investment, and create structures that allow businesses to grow and thrive sustainably.

As a transactional lawyer, I became especially interested in how legal expertise can support entrepreneurs, investors, and institutions in navigating regulatory frameworks, structuring ventures, and mitigating risks. When businesses operate within clear and well-structured legal environments, they are better positioned to expand, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth. This realization inspired me to focus on using legal tools not just for compliance, but as a strategic instrument for development and helping businesses scale, supporting investment flows, and contributing in my own way to building a stronger economic landscape in Cameroon and across Africa.”

Your work spans corporate transactions, regulatory compliance and supporting businesses and investors. How do you see law serving as a tool to create opportunities and foster sustainable development?

“Law, when applied strategically, can be one of the most powerful tools for creating opportunities and driving sustainable development. Beyond its traditional role of regulating conduct and resolving disputes, the law provides the framework within which businesses operate, investments are structured, and economic activities are carried out.

Through areas such as corporate transactions and regulatory compliance, legal expertise helps businesses and investors navigate complex regulatory environments, and mitigate risks. When businesses are properly structured and compliant with existing regulations, they are better positioned to grow, attract investment, and contribute meaningfully to economic activity and job creation.

In emerging economies like Cameroon, the role of legal professionals becomes even more critical. By helping entrepreneurs and investors understand and work within the regulatory landscape, lawyers can facilitate smoother business operations, encourage responsible investment, and promote transparency and accountability. In this way, the law becomes not just a system of rules, but a strategic tool that supports innovation, strengthens institutions, and contribute meaningfully to economic development.”

You are passionate about empowering women in corporate spaces. How does empowering women through law and business contribute to broader economic and social development?

“Empowering women in corporate spaces through law and business plays a critical role in advancing both economic and social development. When women are given equitable access to opportunities, leadership roles, and decision-making platforms, they bring diverse perspectives that strengthen institutions, improve governance, and foster more balanced and inclusive business environments.

From a legal and business standpoint, ensuring that women understand their rights, have access to fair corporate structures, and are supported in building and scaling enterprises contributes directly to economic productivity. Women-led businesses create jobs, stimulate innovation, and expand markets. When legal frameworks and corporate environments intentionally support women’s participation, it encourages broader investment in human capital and drives more sustainable economic growth.

Beyond the economic benefits, empowering women in corporate spaces also has a ripple effect on society. Women who thrive professionally often become mentors, role models, and advocates for the next generation, helping to shift long-standing perceptions about leadership and participation in economic life. In this way, empowering women through law and business not only strengthens organizations but also contributes to building more inclusive and resilient societies.”

Looking ahead, what is your vision for the role of law in supporting economic growth and innovation in Cameroon and what gives you hope about the future?

“Looking ahead, I envision the law in Cameroon playing a more proactive and transformative role in shaping economic growth and innovation. Rather than being seen only as a set of rules that businesses must comply with, the law should function as a foundation that supports entrepreneurship, protects investments, and encourages innovation. Clear legal frameworks, efficient regulatory systems, and strong corporate governance structures can create an environment where businesses are able to grow with confidence and where both local and foreign investors see Cameroon as a reliable place to operate.

I also believe that as our economy continues to evolve, the legal profession will increasingly be called upon to support emerging sectors such as technology, infrastructure, energy, and new investment models. Lawyers will need to play a more strategic role in helping businesses structure transactions, anticipate regulatory risks, and build sustainable ventures that contribute to national development.

What gives me hope about the future is the growing ambition and resilience of Cameroon’s younger generation of professionals and entrepreneurs. There is a clear shift toward innovation, collaboration, and a stronger understanding of the importance of governance and structure in building successful businesses. With continued reforms, stronger institutions, and professionals who are committed to using their expertise to support progress, I am optimistic that the law will continue to serve as a powerful tool in unlocking Cameroon’s economic potential.”
